Stretch marks
Striae — scarring left by rapid stretch of the skin.
What it is
Stretch marks (striae) develop when the dermis is stretched excessively, leading to the tearing of collagen and elastin fibres. They typically emerge during rapid growth or significant weight fluctuations — and during pregnancy, where hormonal changes increase susceptibility.
Initially, stretch marks present as red or purple lines that gradually fade to white or silver tones over time. Earlier intervention gives better outcomes, but established marks can still be softened — microneedling and PRF together stimulate collagen remodelling and improve texture.
Why it happens
- —Rapid growth during puberty
- —Pregnancy and post-partum
- —Significant weight gain or loss
- —Hormonal medications
